What is Authentication in cyber security?

The process of verifying the identity of a user or device.

Authentication is the process of verifying the identity of a user or device before granting access to a system or resource. It ensures that the person or entity requesting access is who they claim to be. Common authentication methods include passwords, biometrics (fingerprints, facial recognition), and security tokens. Strong authentication mechanisms are essential for protecting sensitive information and preventing unauthorized access. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring multiple forms of verification.
